READ: 'Turn Up The Heat' Album Breakdown - Track 5

Written by Matt Interrupt

This one is the title track 'Turn Up the Heat' by Top Cat which started life as a remake the Bam Bam riddim on the Star Trail label (See Beres Hammond - Roadblock). I originally made this riddim because the original LP I bought had no instrumental version and I just wanted something to play for vocalists in DJ sets.

I think the turning point came when I started playing around with bass sounds in Serum and came up with the extra bass sound in the verse - It almost gives it a D&B kinda vibe.

This was actually the last track of the whole album to be voiced and mixed. We had already voiced a dubplate on the riddim with Horseman and James had just done a show with Top Cat and was keen to get him on a tune. The deadline for the LP was very close so we weren't sure if it was going to make the cut, but he sent us the vocal with a few days to spare and I finished the vocal mix that week.

The album's title was already decided at this point so we asked Top Cat if he could write something with the 'Turn Up the Heat' lyric. I particularly like how he says 'Come in Top Cat and make the ting complete' because that's exactly what happened - he came in with the last tune with literally days to spare and completed the LP.

I think this turned out to be one of my favourite tracks from the album due to its danceability and fun bass-driven vibe! Top Cat has always been a favourite vocalist of mine too so it was great to be able to work with him on it.
